Au Pair Visas and the Au Pair Visa Regulations
What many people call an Au Pair Visa is really known as a J-1 Visa. All au pairs are required to have a valid J-1 visa before they are permitted to enter the United States. J-1 Visas are issued by the U.S. Department of State under the J-1 Visa program.
With a valid J-1 Visa, an au pair may work legally in the United States for a period of one year. Au pairs and host families also have the option to extend the au pair's visa, subject to U.S. Department of State approval, for an additional 6, 9 or 12 months after the original au pair visa year ends. A summer au pair visa program also exists that allows au pairs to obtain an au pair visa for a Summer Au Pair program only.
