Au Pair Visas and the Au Pair Visa Regulations

aupair visasWhat many people call an Au Pair Visa is really known as a J-1 Visa. All au pairs are required to have a valid J-1 visa before they are permitted to enter the United States. J-1 Visas are issued by the U.S. Department of State under the J-1 Visa program.

With a valid J-1 Visa, an au pair may work legally in the United States for a period of one year. Au pairs and host families also have the option to extend the au pair's visa, subject to U.S. Department of State approval, for an additional 6, 9 or 12 months after the original au pair visa year ends. A summer au pair visa program also exists that allows au pairs to obtain an au pair visa for a Summer Au Pair program only.  Read more about the Au Pair J-1 Visa regulations set be the U.S. Department of State.

Under State Department au pair program regulations, an au pair can only receive 1 au pair visa in their lifetime. Once au pair visas expire, an au pair cannot legally continue as an au pair through Au Pair USA or any other au pair program in the U.S.
