Au pairs will discover that Connecticut is a state of great physical beauty, rich in history and culture. Connecticut was one of the original colonies and has a lot of history associated with it. The land is rolling hills with lots of trees in the country areas, and includes cities, small towns, and farming areas. There are many opportunities in the area for social and cultural activities and enjoying the out-of-doors. We experience all four seasons—crisp autumn air in the fall, a moderate springtime, warm summers and snowy winters. Coastal Fairfield County is 30 miles of beautiful coastlines and picturesque New England countryside. Located in the Southwestern corner of the state, only 35 miles northeast of New York City, it is home to splendid beaches, parks, nature preserves and historical sites as well as superb shopping, dining, museums and entertainment.
Connecticut is known for it's many small quaint towns that date back to the Revolutionary War. It is a very desirable place to live because families appreciate the small town atmosphere and history within easy driving distance to larger cities such as Stamford, Norwalk or Danbury. The towns have their own unique charm, but their proximity to New York City makes them particularly appealing. Many people live in Connecticut and commute into New York City to work. Greenwich is approximately 30 minutes and Stamford is 48 minutes away from New York by train.
Stamford, the 4th largest city in Connecticut, is 25 miles to the northeast of New York City, and 40 miles southwest of New Haven. Hartford and New Haven are located in Central Connecticut, which is 2 hours by train from New York City and about 2 1/2 hours from Boston. Hartford is the capital of Connecticut and the site of one of the first Colonial efforts to resist the English rule.
The larger cities of Stamford, Norwalk, Danbury and New Haven offer good restaurants, night life, dancing, movies, shopping and lots of fun things to do. The beach at Westport is always a fun summer destination. New Haven is a very vital city located on the Long Island Sound and is the home of Yale University, an internationally recognized institution of higher education. No matter where you are in Connecticut, there are many local colleges that offer a wide variety of classes. Au pairs have many schools and courses to choose from. Some of the colleges and universities permit students to audit classes at a reduced fee.
Being on the shore, our climate is milder than the northern areas, with winters averaging 20-30 degrees F during the days, and snow that melts quickly when it falls. Our summers are warm with temperatures from 75-95 degrees F on average.
