For Au Pairs in the New York City Area
New York City is one of the world's leading commercial, financial, and cultural centers, and is the largest city in the United States. It is also the melting pot of the world where you will find people from all different cultures and environments. It is the heart of the nation's cultural life. Broadway is world renowned for its theaters, and museums such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art are among the best in the world.
Au Pairs who live in New York will have access to some of the most diverse and exciting events and activities in the world. Some host families will provide access to a car, but there is transportation available all over New York (trains, buses, taxis).
The New York area has many au pairs, so you will have no problem meeting other au pairs from all over the world. You will never run out of things to do on your time off.
It may take you some time to adjust to the hustle and bustle, the transportation system and the fast-paced way of life here. Don't expect too much from yourself right away; in no time at all it will feel like your second home.
Your American family will be very different from your family at home and probably very different from other American families. New Yorkers are notorious for working hard and playing hard and they sometimes overextend themselves, leaving little time for just sitting back and relaxing. The most successful au pairs here are those who are independent and open-minded.
We have four seasons of weather. December thru March it can be very cold and snowy, but there are times when the weather can warm up in these months too. You definitely need to bring a nice heavy coat. April through June is beautiful. You have mostly dry warm comfortable days where you need a light jacket at night. June through August is usually very warm. These are the beach and swimming pool days. Shorts and light clothing are the norm. September through November again the leaves change colors and it starts to get cooler, so you will need a light jacket.
As far as education you could not be in a better State. New York has many of the top schools in the world and you will have a wide variety of subjects to study.
