Au Pair USA - Your Nanny Alternative

au pairs and nannies childcare

Nanny and au pair are often used interchangeably, but there are some big differences between these two types of childcare.  Learning the differences between au pair agencies and nanny agencies can help families choose the best option for their children.

What is an Au Pair?

Au pairs are young, foreign-born young adults between the ages of 18 and 26 who choose to become au pairs as an educational and cultural exchange opportunity. They live with a host family and provide childcare in exchange for room, board and a small stipend. Au pair agencies assist families in choosing and hosting an au pair and acts as the au pairs J-1 Visa sponsors.  Au pair agencies are designated to offer au pair programs by the U.S. Department of State.  Au pairs are paid, but au pair programs are not typical employer/employee relationships.  Host families should be willing to accept an au pair into their home as an older sister or brother and include au pairs in family dinners, trips and gatherings. Many host families develop bonds with their au pairs that last long after their time together ends.

What is a Nanny?

Professional nannies are usually between the ages of 18 and 50, and may hold some advanced degree in early childhood development. A nanny agency usually offers professional referrals and nannies are often members of unions or other organizations. Families determine if a nanny position will be live-in or live-out and nannies typically work between 40 and 70 hours per week. It is a traditional employer/employee relationship and nannies may be contracted to do additional household chores.

There are many items to consider when choosing between hosting an au pair or hiring a nanny.

Cost Savings

Au pairs are significantly less expensive then full-time nannies or daycare. Au pairs are paid a U.S. Department of State mandated cash stipend of around $157 per week in addition to room and board. If you average all fees associated with au pairs, the average total per week is about $295 or $7-$8 per hour. Nanny salaries range from $350 to $600 per week, or $12-$18 per hour.

No Extra Cost Per Child

Au pairs receive the same cash stipend no matter how many children are under their care. Nannies and Nanny Agencies usually charge an additional fee per child.

Flexible Scheduling

Au pairs work according to the family's schedule and are usually more flexible with days off and other schedule conflicts then nannies. Au pairs can also travel with families on vacations and outings, providing continuous childcare. Nannies may have personal commitments or vacations that may disrupt scheduling.

Cultural Exchange Opportunities

Au pairs bring the flavor of their culture and their country into the family. Many families choose an au pair from a specific country or region that's part of the family's nationality or intended vacation plans. Other families choose au pairs to broaden their children's exposure to a new culture and language. Au pairs typically introduce children to new foods, songs, games, holidays and celebrations, along with adding a new perspective to their lives.

Training

Au pair programs are regulated by the U.S. Department of State. Au pairs must be trained in CPR, first aid, child development and child discipline issues. Domestic nannies are not required to have specific childcare training. Nanny agencies are also self-regulated.
