Host Family Requirements

We have many types of families who welcome an au pair to their home. In order to host, the U.S. Department of State and Au Pair USA require the following of host families:

  • Be American citizens or legal permanent residents and speak English as the primary language in the home
  • Provide the au pair with a private bedroom that includes a window
  • Pass a criminal background check and employment verification
  • Submit two non-family references
  • Meet with your Local Coordinator for an in-home interview
  • Follow guidelines for au pair working hours, job duties, compensation, and time off

In addition, host families agree to comply with the U.S. Department of State regulations and Au Pair USA program guidelines as outlined in the Host Family Agreement.
